WE DAY (From Me to We)

BEFORE:

Going to We Day today as guest of David Stillman, the regional director.
I will be there with 18,000 school kids, celebrating their service activities throughout the year. Kind of a motivational pep rally and spiritual affirmation of the value of compassion. I will be there as witness, as elder, and probably I will get pretty jazzed and motivated myself.

AFTER:

Returned from We Day, still vibrating! It was like a pep rally, and the team we were rooting for was Humanity. 18,000 high school kids (as far as the eye could see) were cheering like they were at a Taylor Swift concert, for speakers like the guy who climbs mountains with no legs, and the woman who survived African genocidal armies to go to Yale, and Magic Johnson who talked about sending 10,000 LA kids to college. The kids cheered for the spirit of empowerment, and for their own power. They cheered for the idea that their generation can change the world. And in my seat with my wife I prayed, and meditated that their souls might actually be able to pull it off. I felt how if we can come to our senses and pull our heads out of the newspapers and TV and computer distractions, what power we have to do good. And I am cheering for the folks who have created these programs that support and encourage this commitment to service to the future of our world, and for the kids who will be the change.
